What is Passivation?

Passivation is a chemical treatment process that enhances the natural corrosion resistance of stainless steel and other corrosion-resistant alloys. The process removes free iron and other surface contaminants left behind after machining, fabrication, or handling, and helps regenerate a protective chromium oxide layer on the metal surface.

How Passivation Works

Cleaning & Degreasing: Parts are thoroughly cleaned to remove oils, grease, and debris.

Acid Bath Treatment: Stainless steel is immersed in a passivation solution (commonly nitric acid or citric acid).

Oxide Layer Formation: The treatment removes free iron and allows the formation of a uniform, inert chromium oxide layer.

Rinsing & Drying: Parts are rinsed with deionized water and dried to prevent water spots or recontamination.
